Our great range of premium feeds are suited to livestock, pets, and birds. Similarly, we have other popular products targeted at the equine sector and fishery customers.

The quality of feeds is reflected in the health and happiness of the animals that eat it; these results are what bring customers back to our products. But the standards we set with feed also extends to our role as a trade supplier.

Premium Farm and Pet Feed

Poultry have always been good at finding their own food. Whether they were foraging, catching insects, or picking up spilled grain around the farm. But as times have changed and poultry farming has grown, the way we feed our chickens has changed too. This leads to the question: what can I feed chickens?

For the best produce, chickens need the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins. Nowadays, we’ve developed nutritionally rich poultry feeds that suit the needs of all kinds of chickens at all kinds of ages. With the right kind of feeds, your chickens won’t have to range far from the chicken coop to get all their nutrients.

What Can I Feed Chickens from the Chicken Feeder?

Most chicken feed comes in mash or pellet form. Mash feed will be ground, allowing the poultry to pick from the ingredients. Pelleted feed is essentially mash feed that has been moulded into pellets, and will be swallowed whole. Newly hatched chicks will often find mash easier to eat.

Copdock Mill offer a range of both mash and pellet feeds to suit both chicks and adult chickens. The Range Layers products cater to laying hens, with ingredients specifically designed to foster healthy laying. The high calcium content of this feed leads to stronger shells. The Range Layers feed comes in both a chicken layers pellets form and mash form. Verm-X supplements both feeds, a formulation that supports intestinal health. You can still safely eat the eggs thanks to its all-natural ingredients.

Also available are complete feeding stuff for growing poultry at a variety of ages. Copdock Mill’s Chick Starter Micros will get chicks growing in their first 5 weeks. Rather than a mash, unique small pellets make up this feed. Small chicks will find this easy to eat; helping them quickly get used to pellet feed. Once chicks hit 6 weeks, they can then swap to Copdock Mill’s traditional Growers Pellets, which will serve them to finish.

Keep your Chicken Coop Happy with Copdock Mill

Of course, one answer expected to the question ‘what can I feed chickens?’ is corn. Mixed Corn is a great natural treat for hens after a larger morning feed of pellets. But Copdock Mill also offer a Super Mixed Corn product, supplemented with oyster shells, hen grit and extra protein. This mix is perfect for garden hens. A handful of Mixed Corn is a great way to supplement the main poultry feed in the chicken feeder.

Copdock Mill have a great range of feeds for all kinds of chickens. But their expertise goes well beyond poultry. As a leading specialist in animal feed, Copdock Mill have been supplying to trade and pet-owners for years. For trade enquiries get in touch with Copdock Mill today. Or, if you’re just on the hunt for the best in pet feed, you can find their full range of feeds at Gladwells Pet & Country Stores.

When it comes to dog supplies, it’s always a good idea to find someone you can trust. Whether it’s one dog or several, the welfare of your animals is important to you. You’ll want to keep your pet comfy, content and entertained. But most important of all, you’ll want to keep your dog healthy. To do that you need to look after their diet and provide the very best food you can.

Copdock Mill

Here at Copdock Mill we pride ourselves on being dog food suppliers with a difference. That’s because we supply a range of cost-effective high quality dog food. We supply through nine Gladwells Pet & Country Stores across East Anglia and the south east of England. We also offer a comprehensive range of quality dog beds and dog toys to keep your dog comfortable and occupied. For premium dog supplies we’re hard to beat.

What type of food?

Looking at dog supplies to find the best type of food for your pet can be a challenge. Not that long ago most dog food came in a tin, and a lot of it still does. Nowadays, along with wet, raw and fresh foods, dry foods are becoming increasingly popular. These generally consist of pellets (or kibble) made from a mix of ingredients including essential vitamins, oils and nutrients. Many of them are designed to provide a complete diet for your pet. This offers a convenient and often more cost-effective way to feed your dog.

Copdock Mill’s range of premium dog food, Brigadier’s Choice, is formulated to suit any breed at any age. It’s made without wheat or wheat gluten, so it’s hypoallergenic, too. Below is a guide to the options available to ensure your dog stays healthy, happy and active.

Premium Puppy

This highly digestible kibble provides a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Omega-3 and 6, zinc and biotin are added to help ensure your puppy’s healthy skin and coat. Other essential ingredients are good for joint repair and mobility.

Adult Chicken & Rice

This palatable food will provide a complete diet for your dog. Because of the protein source it’s very digestible. Furthermore, essential fatty acids, zinc and biotin will keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy.

Other choices provide a variation in flavour, but with all the same vitamins, minerals and nutrients. This allows you to find the one your dog likes best. Options include Duck & Potato, Lamb & Rice, Salmon & Potato and Turkey & Rice. The potato provides a digestible source of carbohydrates.

Food to suit your dog

We offer food specially formulated for both large breed puppies and large breed dogs, as well as working dogs. If you have a small dog, or a dog that’s no longer young, we’ve thought about you, too. If you’re looking for the best dog supplies, you’ll find exactly what you need at Gladwells Pet & Country Stores. To make your life even easier, an order & collection service is available at each store.

Across the globe, soybeans form an important part of animal feeds for all kinds of livestock. Soy animal feed is in fact the single most important source of protein for farm animals. Far surpassing other feeds when it comes to protein content, soybean meal is now the standard for poultry and other livestock. Globally, almost 80% of soybean grown worldwide is fed to livestock. Closer to home, of the 3.1 million tons of soy beans, meal and oil that were imported into Britain in 2015/16, over a third was fed to livestock. Soy meal makes up the overwhelming part of this import, and half of it is fed mostly to pigs and poultry.

Soy Animal Feed for Livestock and Poultry

When extracting soybean oil, most soy animal feed is produced as a by-product. Often different types of soybean meal will be graded by their protein content, which can depend on the presence of seed hulls. Dehulled seeds will tend to have the highest protein content and the lowest crude fibres. The protein content of different soy animal feeds are tailored to the needs of different livestock.

Since the outlawing of bonemeal in poultry farming, soya has become the dominant animal feed. Soy meal remains the most affordable feed option over alternatives like lentils and other legumes. For farmers, soya is still the best source of protein in terms of cost.

With their own range of soy animal feeds, Copdock Mill provide all you need to support various livestock.

For poultry, Copdock Mill have a variety of feeds suited to poultry of different ages and uses. Targeted at laying hens, the Range Layers feed is available in a pellet or mash form. Also available are Growers Pellets for growing poultry from six weeks. Thanks to Soya Bean Extract, this feed has a high protein content to keep poultry growing to finish. Alongside this feed, there are Starter Micros, a feed specifically for chicks. Furthermore, Copdock Mill’s Poultry Gold feed offers a full poultry diet in one feed, with high protein content courtesy of soybean.

You can find these poultry feeds and more at many pet food wholesale stores, with the full range on offer at Gladwells Pet & Country Stores.

Seed and Feed Mixes for All Kinds of Animals

Copdock Mill also provide a range of feed mixes for bird, dogs and other small animals.

Birdfeed mixes include seed mixes specifically targeted at caged and wild birds. As well as an Aviary Mix, there are various seed mixes for Budgies, Canaries, Cockatiels, Parakeets and Finches.

As well as this, you’ll find just as much variety on offer from Copdock’s small animal feeds. There are three different mixes for rabbits, alongside other mixes for guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils.

For dogs, Copdock Mill’s Corporal’s Crunch and Brigadier’s Choice range offer choice to owners of working dogs and pets. The two Corporal’s Crunch rations have all the nutrition a working dog needs. Premium, flavoured kibbles make up the Brigadier’s Choice range, with a specially formulated mix available for puppies.

Copdock Mill’s entire range is available for trade customers, and is always open to new requests for trade accounts. You can also buy mixes directly from Gladwell’s Pet and Country Stores.

If you are planning on feeding any feathered visitors during the winter months, it is vital to know the right food for wild birds. Not all birds eat the same food, and some foods may be harmful to certain bird species. Throughout the colder months, natural sources of food, such as berries, are harder for birds to find, so providing a feeder full of seed in the garden can be vital. A high energy source of feed will also go a long way in helping to sustain the birds throughout winter. In addition, you need to make sure your feeding equipment is good quality and hygienic, and that a regular feeding routine is established for the birds. So what birds are likely to visit and what do they eat? Let us look at the different species of bird and the right food for wild birds.

Types of Common Garden Birds

While many types of birds may appear in your garden, these are among the most common:

House sparrow

Male sparrows can be distinguished by their brown tops, grey stomachs and chestnut/white wings. They also feature a black bib and grey cap. Females and juveniles have a duller colour. Sparrows eat a variety of seeds, including millet and sunflower seeds.

Starling

Adult starlings have oily-black feathers with a purple/green sheen, while juveniles are dark grey/brown in appearance. In winter, small beige spots appear on their feathers. Starlings will eat anything including insects, fruits and grains. They enjoy most seeds, although they tend to avoid large seeds like sunflower and peanuts unless finely crushed.

Blue tit

These can be identified by their blue/green top, blue wings/tail and yellow stomachs. Their heads feature a blue cap with white cheeks and black eye stripes. Blue tits will eat a range of grains and seeds including sunflower, suet and peanuts.

Great tit

These are identified by their green top and yellow stomach with a black stripe down the middle. Their heads are black with white cheeks. Much like their blue tit cousins they will eat a mix of seeds including sunflower, suet and peanuts.

Blackbird

Male blackbirds have black feathers, yellow bill and a yellow ring around their eye. Females and juveniles are dark brown in colour. While blackbirds can eat anything they prefer soft foods, so seeds and grains like maize and oats are most suitable.

Robin

Robins have brown tops, white stomachs and a red breast. Juveniles have a mottled gold and brown appearance. Robins eat a range of seeds including suet, crushed nuts and sunflower hearts.

Copdock Mill’s Food For Wild Birds

A mix of seeds that includes aniseed for better digestion. Ingredients are linseed, aniseed, maize, sunflower seeds, white millet and more.

Copdock Mill Wheat Free Mix

A fine seed mix without the wheat that can attract doves and pigeons. Includes maize, white and red millet, canary seed, safflower, oats and more.

Are you aware of what not to feed wild birds as well as which substances can actually make them ill? Although we all enjoy the presence of these flying friends, the fact of the matter is that feeding them the wrong types of food can place their health in jeopardy. Some of the foods mentioned below are likely to come as a bit of a surprise. Whether you are an avid bird watcher or you simply want to learn more about their unique dietary requirements, the following suggestions will be quite useful.

Quality Ingredient Bird Feed

Many birds have very specific diets (even though they may appear to scavenge from time to time). This is why it is always best to purchase wild bird feed from a reputable supplier. Bird feed is available in a wide variety of mixtures. This will often depend upon the species of bird as well as the nutrients contained within. Here are some common ingredients which many species absolutely adore:

Maize

Soya bean oil

Split peanuts

Black rape

Whole wheat

White millet

These mixtures can often be purchased as pre-formed cakes or as loose grains (normally ideally suited for wild bird feeders). However, you might have also noticed that some of the ingredients mentioned above seem to be fit for human consumption. While this may appear to be true, we need to keep in mind that many human foods contain artificial colours, sweeteners and preservatives. These are not intended for birds and they can cause them harm.

What are toxic foods for birds?

Some foods are more dangerous to birds than others. Avocados are a perfect example. The chemicals contained within an avocado have been known to cause heart problems and even sudden death in some species.

Likewise, any fruits or vegetables with seeds can present a choking hazard. Chocolate is another substance to avoid entirely, as excessive levels of caffeine can lead to seizures and heart attacks in birds.

You might also be surprised to learn that you should not place bread within squirrel proof bird feeders, as this food contains very few sustainable nutrients. A bird which is fed only bread can begin to suffer from serious vitamin deficiencies.

What Foods are Healthy?

If you happen to have bird feeders in your back garden, there are still some common foods which they can be given. Here are some useful examples:

Cooked rice

Fruits with no seeds

Uncooked porridge oats

Potatoes

However, it is still best to opt for professional formulated bird feed. The main advantage here is that the birds will be receiving adequate levels of nutrition. Another interesting fact is that this very same feed can often attract other species. So, you will be able to enjoy a greater variety of birds. The good news is that this bird feed is an economical option and experts are always standing by if you wish to learn more about what is best for a specific type of bird.

Quality Animal Feed from Copdock Mill

Copdock Mill supplies a wide variety of all-natural bird feeds available from our retail Gladwells Pet & Country Stores.
