Earth Day – Our Road To Net Zero

Happy Earth Day 2022!

We thought Earth Day would be the perfect day to share with everyone a step in our road to Net Zero…

In February we applied for and received a grant to cover 75% of the costs of installing new LED lights throughout the Copdock Mill warehouse. Firstly these new lights contain a programmable sensor that detects staff in the area and illuminates accordingly. Secondly they can be programmed to stay on for a certain amount of time and then dim down before switching off completely.

This new lighting installation should save around 5.2 tonnes of CO2 per annum!

Net zero is important as it’s the best way we can tackle climate change by reducing global warming. However this is just one important step to share on Earth Day in our developing road to achieving a net zero status.

Working in tandem with Re-Cycle Bikes for Africa

Five more of our Gladwells Pet & Country Stores have joined the recycling scheme with charity Re-Cycle Bikes For Africa!

Working in tandem with Re~Cycle we now have bike drop off stations at our stores in:

Bury St Edmunds

Stowmarket

Copdock

Rayleigh

Peterborough

Faversham

Re-Cycle used bikes at Gladwells Pet & Country Store.

GP&CS Copdock is now a bike drop off point for Re~Cycle Bikes to Africa! Working in partnership with the charity, our store is now a designated donation point.

Re-Cycle receives used bikes in the UK and donates them to trusted partners in Africa.

“The ethos behind our work is sustainability. Re-Cycle works in partnership with four organisations across four different African countries, each one doing something inspiring and empowering with the bicycles we send them”.

“In Britain, millions of bikes are thrown away or lie unused in sheds, whilst many people in Africa have no access to transport of any kind. People spend hours each day walking to collect water, firewood or to access health care, school and employment. A bicycle lightens this burden and dramatically improves their wellbeing as well as work and education opportunities helping to bring social change. A bicycle cuts travel time to a fraction and can carry passengers and heavy loads. Bikes give families the extra time to earn, learn and enjoy life.The ever growing list below shows the countries that the bikes have been sent to since we started shipping to Africa in 1998. We have now sent more than 94,000 bikes – all thanks to the donations of bikes, time and money from our many wonderful supporters”.
