COVID-19 Update: Lockdown 3.0

Following the announcement by the Prime Minister yesterday evening, we would like to assure you that, as an essential business, we will remain open. As before, we will continue to operate as closely to ‘business as usual’ as possible, whilst continuing to take the appropriate covid-safety precautions.

We will continue to deliver your goods in a covid-secure way, please be reminded of the measures we have in place:

• Drivers will socially distance themselves from customers by at least 2 meters.
• Our usual service of unpacking/unloading customer orders into the store remains prohibited until further notice.
• Cash handling – Cash needs to be bagged and handed to the driver in the bag, drivers can no longer handle cash directly.
• Paperwork – The driver will sign customer paperwork in presence of the customer at the social distance of 2 meters.
• If your store is not going to be open or hours have changed please let us know immediately.

Face masks in our Gladwells retail stores

As of 24/07/20 suitable face coverings or masks must be worn by customers in our Gladwells Pet & Country Stores.

Following guidelines set by the government, this latest safety precaution has been added to our current social distancing measures.

Masks must be worn by customers at all times during their visit to one of our stores. Thank you to all of the loyal customers that have supported us through this year and have adapted along with us to the new guidelines in store.

Social Distancing In Stores

To keep customers and staff safe we have a number of safety measures currently in place in our Gladwells Pet & Country Stores. Whilst each store is slightly different from the other we have tried to implement the following precautionary measures where possible:

SAFETY MEASURES

• One way system
• 2m distancing guides
• Screen guards or extra distancing at till areas
• Customer number limits in smaller stores
• Customers are encouraged to shop alone to reduce numbers
• Close proximity services suspended (e.g. hat fittings)
• Contactless payment advised

Our retail stores are also offering delivery and call & collect services as an alternative to browsing in person.

Welcome back, Bait customers! As many of you begin to open your doors as lockdown restrictions begin to lift, we would like to update you on the next steps we’re taking to safely work around COVID-19.

Moving Out of Lockdown, The New Way of Doing Business
As the country’s lockdown restrictions begin to ease, and the number of new COVID-19 cases decrease, we’ve been looking at what the ‘new normal’ may begin to look like and plan for the inevitable changes ahead. It’s safe to say that the next few months of trading will be different to the old ways, but how can you get back to some form of normality whilst maintaining safe working practices?

Our Teams at Copdock Angling
Although we know that many of you have been closed over the last 11 weeks, the wholesale side of our business has remained open to serve our pet food trade customers. However, over the past week, we have been introducing our Bait telesales team back to the site, to coincide with the government’s ease of restrictions on fishing.

Our current office space doesn’t allow us to bring back everybody whilst maintaining a safe distance, so we have had a move around, to ensure safe practices are in place and have looked only at bringing back team members that need to be on-site to carry out their role.

Sales Representatives
Our sales representatives have also been brought back to the business, however, rest assured that they will not be attempting to book in face to face appointments any time soon, as the safety and well being of both our sales representatives and you, our customers still remains our top priority. The reps will be on hand to assist the telesales team with orders and customer care over the phone.

Supply and Demand
Throughout these challenging times, our operational and manufacturing teams have been extremely busy. We request that you only order the items you need, to ensure that our stock levels are sensibly maintained and supply remains continuous.

We will be working hard with all our suppliers to ensure there is as little disruption to stocks as possible.

However, it’s a good opportunity to discuss and look at alternative products when any issues do arise. Your sales representative will be happy to help with this should you need any suggestions.

To help you take the necessary steps to implement social distancing in your stores, we will be sending you a free social distancing pack with the first order you place with us this month.

COVID-19 Update: Head Office Opening Hours

As the country’s lockdown continues we wanted to take this opportunity to reassure you that we will be remaining open, our usual business hours, in order to keep supplying the pet trade.

At head office, our customer services team will continue to be available via telephone or email Monday to Friday between 7:30am and 5pm. 

Throughout the challenging time we have all experienced these last few weeks, we would like to say thank you to you, our customers, for your support and your patience.

As the country continues to get used to lockdown, we’re starting to see some stability return to the demand for products and our stock levels return to normal.

We kindly thank you for understanding and adhering to the social distancing measures we needed to introduce to keep our drivers safe.

Gladwells Pet & Country Stores COVID-19 Update: Retail Release

During this period, one thing has remained clear, our pets still need their feed! Therefore at Gladwells Pet & Country Stores, we have remained open and tried to continue as close to business as usual as we can. Our stores have retained their usual opening hours, and where possible have offered delivery services. We have seen a phenomenal response to our delivery service and would like to thank our customers for their patience as we have endeavoured to fit in as many deliveries as we can.

In-store, we have the following safety measures in place. We are asking customers to only shop for the necessities as and when they need to, firstly to ensure that our staff and customers are safe and secondly to ensure stock levels are maintained so there is enough stock for everybody. We also ask that customers adhere to the two-meter social distancing restrictions, and in some of our smaller stores, we have had to limit the number of customers we can have in store at any one time. We have launched a “Call and Collect” service, whereby customers can call ahead with an order to collect at an allocated time to help reduce contact in our stores as much as possible. Gladwells Pet & Country Stores are still here for all your pet supplies, accessories and more.

Gladwells Pet & Country Stores COVID-19 Update: Retail Release

During this time of uncertainty, we want to thank you for your patience and reassure you that we are here to support you as much as we can. 

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to affect all our lives, we wanted to reassure you that we are continuing to maintain normal business function as best as we can. Our stores are currently open at their usual opening times, and some of our stores have been able to offer a delivery service. 

We are keeping up-to-date with all the advice from the government and other agencies, and are taking the precautions necessary to keep all our employees and you, our customers, safe. We have put into place some safety precautions for our staff, including setting up extra hand sanitiser stations, regular antibacterial cleaning of all surfaces including trolleys, door handles, switches, our till areas, IT equipment, etc.

We have been very stretched, as demand for products has increased, but we would like to reassure you that we are continuing to replenish stocks as quickly as we can. We ask that you continue to buy as you normally would and that you only come into the store when it is absolutely necessary. If you are able to call ahead in advance to reserve your products, that would really help to reduce the number of customers in-store at any given time. 

Over the next week, we may be introducing social distancing measures in-store, and we kindly ask that you adhere to these as best as possible.  In the meantime, may we remind you that the government has recommended that if you are unwell, that you do not visit our stores?

To ensure that we are keeping you safe and our lorry drivers safe, and to help us to continue delivering to you as best as we possibly can, the following changes have been made to our lorry drivers service:

COVID-19 Update: Taking Precautions

Dear Customers

During this time of uncertainty, we want to thank you for your patience and reassure you that we are here to support you as much as we can. 

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to affect all our lives, we wanted to reassure you that we are continuing to maintain normal business function as best as we can. This last week we have seen volumes increase in excess of 75% putting a big strain on all of the customer service, warehouse and delivery teams. This will inevitably end up with some out of stock of the more popular lines and we are working hard with our suppliers to keep stock flowing in the right direction.

We are keeping up-to-date with all the advice from the government and other agencies, and are taking the precautions necessary to keep all our employees and you, our customers, safe. 

We are also closely monitoring advice from the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association as to the rapidly changing outlook to our market sector.

Here’s a little update on the following measures that we’ve put into place: 

• The employees from head office that are able to work remotely from home are now doing so.
• Our core admin team will remain in the office, and are taking extra measures to keep safe – extra hygiene precautions have been put into place to keep workstations clean.
• Our sales teams have reduced their time out on the road, visiting customers, but are available by phone and email, should you need anything. 
• Hand sanitiser stations have been set up for our warehouse and manufacturing teams. 
• Our drivers delivering your order have all been equipped with hand sanitiser and will attempt to reduce their contact as social distancing has been recommended.  The drivers are also instructed to sign on behalf of you for the delivery so as to minimise the handling of paperwork.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation at this time. 

COVID-19 Update: Placing Trade Orders

Due to the current situation with the COVID–19 virus, we are experiencing a very high number of customer orders, with the volume on those orders greatly increased to what we would normally expect.

All our departments are working extremely hard to fulfil these orders to the best of our ability,  our buying team and production departments are also working hard to maintain our stock levels so we can continue to fulfil your requirements.

In order to help us give you the best possible service please may we ask for your assistance by ensuring that your orders are placed as per our terms and conditions, which is not later than 11 am two working days prior to the delivery.   With additions to orders we will as usual try to accept additions to orders going out on our own transport up to 2 pm the day before delivery, however unfortunately due to the volumes we are currently experiencing we regret that this may not always be possible.

Covid-19 Release

Last week saw the UK Government upgrade their response to Coronavirus to the ‘delay’ phase. This stage brings with it new steps that seek to increase the time until the country reaches the viruses peak. I would like to let you know what we are doing as a company to maintain our service level to you.

H.G. Gladwell & Sons Ltd will be following the advice issued by the UK Government and its Health Advisors for all employees. This currently states:

1. That the most common symptoms of coronavirus are:

• A new and continuous cough.
• A high temperature.

2. If an individual shows symptoms of the coronavirus infection, however mild, they should stay at home and self-isolate for 7 days from the start of your symptoms.

To combat the spread of the disease and the need for self-isolation, H.G. Gladwell & Sons Ltd is working with all employees to ensure all sensible steps are taken to reduce the chances of infection. These include:

• Awareness of recent travel movements.
• Regular and proper handwashing.
• Access to appropriate alcohol hand gels.
• Limiting touches to the face.
• An awareness of their proximity to others.
• No handshake policy for meetings
• The disinfection of highly used surfaces.

In addition to these steps, we continue to closely monitor all guidance issued and adapt these measures where necessary.

Although we currently do not have any employees self-isolating, there is the possibility of this in the coming weeks. H.G. Gladwell & Sons Ltd will be doing everything within our power to maintain our service and minimise the disruption.

It is important, however, to realise that this pandemic is likely to affect all of us personally and professionally. It would, therefore, be irresponsible to suggest that there will not be challenges ahead that will affect our ability to deliver your order in line with your wishes. What I can assure you is that everyone here will be doing everything in their power to reduce the impact of this illness. We will continue to update you if the advice we receive changes and has an impact.

During the Christmas period our Gladwells Pet & Country Stores’ opening times will be changing…

• On Christmas Eve our stores will be closing at 4pm.
• All stores will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
• Stores in Copdock, Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds & Rushden will be open 10-4 on Sunday 27th December.
• Only Suffolk stores in Copdock, Stowmarket & Bury St Edmunds will be open 10-4 on Monday 28th December.
• 29th & 30th December – All stores open as usual.
• On New Years Eve our stores will be closing at 4pm.
• All stores will be closed on New Years Day.
• Normal service resumes from 2nd January 2021 onwards.

Gladwells Faversham Temporary Opening Times

The store will still be open Monday to Saturday but only between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

Fundraising for British Heart Foundation

£221.73 Raised for the British Heart Foundation.

Early in the year we began fundraising for the British Heart Foundation. Each of our Gladwells Pet & Country Stores had a donation pot for customers to drop change into. A small prize raffle was also held at the new Stowmarket store opening day to raise funds for the charity. We are happy to say the stores raised £221.73! Thank you to any customers that contributed to this total, especially during the months of uncertain lockdown.

Here at Copdock Mill we hosted a donation collection bin where staff could drop off items such as clothes to be donated to the Ipswich British Heart Foundation shop. The bin was filled and collected on multiple occasions which will hopefully further the final total and support the vital research the charity is responsible for.

Refit at Gladwells Pet & Country Store, Rayleigh

Over the past couple of months, the team at Gladwells Pet & Country Store in Rayleigh have been busy updating the store.

The refit project start date was 12th July 2020. Project Objectives included:

• Replacing 90% of the existing shelving in the shop area.
• Painting existing interior walls, front doors & exterior walls.
• Installing new till counters with improved serving area.
• Reinstating the Wild Bird range and freezers into the shop area with a complete redesign of layout of shelving and products to create an improved shopping experience.

Local recyclers TLM picked up 2.3 Tons of Heavy Metal shelving which was removed from the shop floor as it was too old and not compatible to reuse through any of our other branches.

A huge amount of work was involved in this project and Darren (Regional Branch Manager) and Mark (Store Manager) would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved! Mark is now a very happy and proud Branch Manager!

Gladwells Pet & Country Store in Rushden will now be open on Sundays!

From Sunday 28th June 2020, the pet supply retail store will be open 10am-4pm every Sunday.

The store in Unit 5 Sanders Lodge Industrial Estate on Wellingborough Road is currently open Monday – Saturday 8.30am-5.30pm. The new opening hours will allow shoppers to browse and buy during Sunday trading hours.

New Stowmarket GP&CS – NOW OPEN!

On Saturday 22nd February we opened our new Gladwells Pet & Country Store in Stowmarket!

The store was officially opened by Stowmarket’s Deputy Mayor Keith Scarff and Copdock Mill’s Managing Director, Simon Gladwell.

The whole team was on hand for the opening day which welcomed customers from all over Suffolk.  Many also brought along their pets to visit the new store which is full of pet treats, feeds, beddings, toys and more.

The new store on Finborough Road, now open 7 days a week, replaces the former Gladwells store in Old Newton which is now closed.

Our GP&CS Stowmarket store is moving

new stowmarket store opening weekend – saturday 22nd february

The existing Gladwells Pet & Country Store in Old Newton, Suffolk will be closing this week. The store will be relocating in to the Stowmarket town center and expanding it’s retail range. This new store is set to open on Saturday 22nd February. With new opening hours on a Sunday, meaning Gladwells Stowmarket will be open 7 days a week.

The new store address will be: 26 Finborough Road, Stowmarket, IP14 1PR.

With parking available in front of the shop for customers and room for larger trade vehicles behind the shop, grabbing your pet supplies will be easy! For those customers who are concerned about the move we also offer a delivery service – bringing everything you need right to your door. (T&Cs apply).

£432.51 Raised for MIND last quarter

Last quarter we supported Mind – the mental health charity. Together we have raised an amazing £432.51!

From October – December 2019 we supported Mind as our charity of the quarter.

Our fundraising included a breakfast morning at Copdock Mill and Christmas Jumper Day. Our Gladwells Pet & Country Stores kept donation pots and a held a Halloween Pumpkin competition. We also sold Christmas pet treat jars internally that were decorated by a local Guides group.

Thank you to everyone that took part in these events and donated to the charity.

Copdock Mill Big Breakfast Morning

We held a Big Breakfast morning on Friday 30th November to support Clic Sargent.

Fork Lift trainer, Neal donned his apron alongside HR manager Amanda to cook and serve bacon rolls and sausage baps to members of staff in exchange for donations to Clic Sargent.

Throughout November, our chain of country stores had Clic Sargent collection buckets stationed at the tills and we are pleased to announce that altogether we raised a total of £411.13.

Clic Sargent – Who we are

When cancer strikes young lives CLIC Sargent helps families limit the damage cancer causes beyond their health. CLIC Sargent fights tirelessly for children and young people with cancer, often when they feel they can’t. We do this individually, locally and nationally, so that they can focus on the important things, like getting well. And if the worst happens, we will work with bereaved families to get them support, to help them cope with their emotional pain. £646 raised for Cancer Research UK

From July – September this year, Copdock Mill and Gladwells Pet & Country Stores have been supporting Cancer Research UK.

Over the quarter we raised £646 for the charity!

Our fundraising events included a sponsored head shave in support of our HR manager, Amanda Bushell.

We also held a Coffee and Cake morning with tombola at head office which can be seen below.

Our Gladwells Pet and Country retail stores also had donation pots in store for customers to help support our fundraising efforts. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that donated during the Quarter.

From October – December we will be supporting Mind.

East Coast Truckers 2019

In August one of our Copdock Mill drivers, Malcolm Ramm, joined the East Coast Truckers!

The charity take disabled, special needs and underprivileged children for a ride in a variety of trucks. A convoy of over 80 trucks and a Police escort drove from Norwich to PleasureWood Hills where they spent the day. They then went on to the Yarmouth Seafront, filling the coastal town with their 80+ strong horn parade! The charity is best known for the convoy that always takes place on the August Bank Holiday.

Rammy was joined by Racheal on the day of the event, which he has been taking part in for a number of years. Racheal’s Mum wrote to Malcom after the day to say: “Thank you so much for making it possible for Racheal to join the convoy experience. You really spoilt us and we had a fantastic time. Whenever we talk about it Racheal giggles and giggles”.

“This annual event is a crowd puller and see’s residents and holidaymakers lining the route to wave to the children riding high in the cabs”.

Car Parking Available for Ed Sheeran Concert

The Copdock Mill site is offering their car park for Ed Sheeran concert attendees. Spaces will be available for Sunday 25th and Monday 26th August Chantry Park shows. This event has been organised in collaboration with the Ipswich Rotary Club.

You can request a car parking space at Gladwells & Country Stores (Copdock). The site location provides convenient access to the A14 and A12, providing a quick departure after the show.

Store Postcode for SatNav: IP8 3LA

Volunteers from the company will be on site from 3.30pm each day when the car park opens to concert attendees. A suggested minimum donation of £5 can be paid on arrival and all proceeds will be donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity. (‘Tap & Go’ Card Payment Available).

Please be aware all personal information provided in the form will be disregarded after the event. Spaces will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Successful applicants will receive a parking number by email. Proof of permit must be presented on arrival.

Any Cars and belongings left on the site are left at the owners risk. Your cars must be collected from the car park before 12.30am. After this, the premises will be locked until the following morning. Cars only, no minibuses or coaches will be accepted.

Copdock Mill supports Cancer Research UK

Copdock Mill employees Mick, Pat and Saeed had their heads shaved to raise money for Cancer Research UK!

The event was arranged in support of their fellow colleague, Amanda, who is currently undergoing treatment for Breast Cancer. Mick & Saeed based at Copdock Mill, and Pat from Gladwells Pet & Country Store voluntarily braved the shave this morning. Originally hoping to raise £100, the team has already reached £250 in one day!

Road Closures

Please be aware there will be roadworks taking place on Old London Road, starting Monday 13th May 2019.

Copdock Mill and the Gladwells Pet & Country Store will remain open during these works. The repairs are scheduled to end Friday 24th May 2019.

The works may affect your route to and from the site, so please see the information provided by Suffolk Highways below.

Recycling Copdock Mill Packaging

Many of our bags are made from polypropylene, which is 5PP recyclable.

Included in this is our wild bird care range and poultry range bags.

Please check with your local recycling centre to find out if you can recycle this locally.

Copdock Mill did the Midnight Walk 2019

This month a team of five Copdock Mill employees took part in the Midnight Walk! The charity event raises money for the local charity, St Elizabeth Hospice. Copdock Mill is supporting the hospice as their charity of the quarter. This year 2,400 walkers participated in the walk that takes place overnight on a 6 or 10 mile route around Ipswich.

Marie Podkomorzy, Rebecca Randall, Marie Ford, Sam Day & Amanda Bushell from the Head Office formed the Copdock Mill team. Together, they have raised over £880 for the charity!

With other upcoming events to support St Elizabeth Hospice, Copdock Mill hopes to raise over £1000 for the charity this year.

Staff Changeovers at Copdock Mill

After over 30 years in the Pet Trade, Hugh Chennell has decided to retire. Sales Representative Hugh joined Copdock Mill in April 2012. Hugh is known by almost everyone in this trade and as a result will be sadly missed not only by everyone at Copdock, but also the pet trade as a whole.

Former GP&CS store manager Colin Shadbolt will be the new account manager replacing Hugh. Colin has worked for Gladwells for 22 years in a variety of branch roles. The longest being as the Stowmarket Branch Manager. Colin will now be based in Kent and will start in April 2019.

Dean Cron is the new branch manager at Gladwells Stowmarket. Dean has been promoted from Assistant Branch Manager at the Bury St Edmunds store.

We here at Copdock Mill wish all three of them happiness and success with their futures.

Copdock Mill Does The Midnight Walk 2019

A team from Copdock Mill Head Office is taking part in the Midnight Walk to raise money for the St Elizabeth Hospice Charity.

“The Midnight Walk is our flagship sponsored walk through the outskirts of Ipswich. The walk is for men and women and you can choose to take on the six or ten mile route to raise vital funds for the hospice. This year’s walk will take place on the 11th of May 2019 and to celebrate our 30th anniversary the theme is Rewind to the 80’s so throw on your brightest leg warmers, get the hair crimpers out and join us for the biggest party in Suffolk! Not only does the walk give you the chance to party like it’s 1989, it also gives you time to remember those who mean the most to you.

The Dog Portrait Competition – Sandwich Store

The Gladwell’s Pet & Country Store in Sandwich is hosting The Dog Portrait Competition on Saturday 20th October. The competition is in association with LS Images Photography and Brigadier’s Choice Super Premium Dog Food.

The competition is available between 9:30am and 4pm.

Entry is free

All you need to do is bring your dog along to the store for a free photo-shoot. The winner will receive the free framed portrait of their dog!

In addition we are giving away a free Brigadier’s Choice goody bag to the first 50 entrants! Plus, on the day, there will be a chance to enter our free prize draw to win a 12kg bag of Brigadier’s Choice Super Premium Dog Food!

Copdock Mill Support the East Coast Truckers Event

In August Rammy, one of our artic drivers, joined the East Coast Truckers to take disabled, special needs and underprivileged children out for a ride in the lorries.

A convoy of 86 Lorries, 2 Fire Engines, 1 Ambulance and a Police escort drove from Norwich to Pleasurewood Hills where they spent the day. (See more here)

They then went on to the Yarmouth Seafront, filling the coastal town with their 86 strong horn parade! Rammy was joined by Anthony (bottom right) who is 7 years old and by the looks of it very much enjoyed his day.

EAST COAST TRUCKERS

About East Coast Truckers:

“We are a children’s charity that helps disabled and disadvantaged children within the East Anglia area and are well known for our Children’s Convoy.

In the early 1980’s East Coast Truckers was formed as a social club for drivers and their families. The first Convoy was in 1986 with just 22 trucks taking disabled children from Repton House, Norwich to Pleasurewood Hills.

Our 25th Convoy had over 100 trucks. The Convoy is what it is because of the many people that support it and take part, be it a driver, support volunteers and especially the Norfolk & Suffolk Constabulary.

The motorbike outriders do the escort in their own time. Many people are unaware of the other benefits we provide to assist the children and their families. Where funds are available we have provided specialist wheelchairs, paid for special medical assessments and sensory therapy not covered under the NHS.

We also provide free respite holidays for families at two sites on the Norfolk Coast, California Cliffs and Vauxhall Holiday Park. Families are given passes to facilities and entertainment to ensure that the maximum benefit is offered.

During the course of the year, we organise days out to local tourist attractions, providing transport, free passes for the children and subsidising the costs to family members.

Copdock Mill Support Blue Cross

The Blue Cross Suffolk Rehoming Centre is a charitable organisation based in Wherstead in Suffolk where they have dogs, cats and rabbits that are looking for new forever homes and they help to find the best homes possible for these animals.

For a long time Gladwells Pet and Country Stores have been supporting the Blue Cross by kindly donating to them on a regular basis.

Most recently, Gladwells Pet and Country Store at Copdock, have helped out Blue Cross Suffolk re homing centre by donating a pallet load of surplus dog food to them. This is going to be a great help to them and to all of the dogs that are struggling to find a home.

If you would like to make a donation, you can head down to our Copdock store where there is a drop off bin for the Blue Cross Suffolk rehoming centre where any donations are always greatly appreciated.

Paws in the Park Show – Billericay

Three furry friends visit the Gladwells Pet and Country Store stand for a drink and treat at Paws in the Park.

The Gladwells Pet and Country Store Team from the Rayleigh Branch in conjunction with Brigadiers Choice Premium dog food attended the new Paws In the Park Dog Show on the 30th of June and the 1st of July at the Barleylands show ground near Billericay.

All our visitors had the chance to snap up some bargains, get some free samples and also receive an in store discount voucher for our Rayleigh store.

As you can see these three cheeky little dogs came and got themselves some bargains and cooled down at our free drink and treat station…It was a very hot weekend and all the dogs and their owners needed to keep cool, it was a great show and we look to attend again next year….

Gladwells Pet and Country Store Peterborough and Brigadier’s Choice at the Crowland Show

The Gladwells Pet and Country Store Team from the Peterborough Branch were at the annual Crowland Show to promote the branch. Also in attendance were representatives from our premium dog food brand Brigadiers Choice.
